Kayla Larios - LAMC Student Spotlight of the Week
At just 22 years old, Kayla Larios has transformed her life and is determined to uplift others. She found her passion for teaching at Los Angeles Mission College (LAMC), and her journey underscores the difference education and community can make.
Before arriving at L.A. Mission College, Kayla felt adrift. “I wasn’t doing anything, and I needed to find a purpose in my life,” she recalls. She was initially prepared to pay for her education, however, the Dream Resource Center (DRC) became a life-changing resource. The center not only helped her navigate financial aid but also provided guidance and opportunities that helped shape her path.
Kayla initially pursued mechanical engineering, hoping to follow in her father’s footsteps in the HVAC industry, but volunteering at local elementary schools revealed her true calling. “I’ve always wanted to be a teacher because I love kids,” she says. Now, as an Elementary Education major, she is working toward her associate degree and plans to transfer to a four-year university. Her long-term goals include earning her teaching credential, pursuing a master’s degree, and one day becoming a program chair in education.
Kayla’s involvement at L.A. Mission College showcases her drive to make a difference. She serves as a student ambassador, where she connects peers with campus resources. As president of the Rising Dreamers Club, she recently organized a toy drive for children at the Child Development Center. She also interns at the DRC through the LAMC Dreamers Fellowship, advocating for undocumented students and helping them access opportunities to thrive.
Her dedication extends beyond campus. Through a paralegal internship at the YMCA, she assists with citizenship applications and English classes, helping her community navigate challenges similar to her own.
Reflecting on her time at LAMC, Kayla credits her connections for her success. “College seemed like it was going to be lonely, but I’ve met so many people who support me and have my back,” she says. She credits the mentorship of DRC Coordinator Maria Flores and Counselor Sally Ibarra for their continued guidance.
Kayla’s message to other students reflects her own inspiring journey: “Don’t be afraid to ask for help or to say you’re undocumented. There are so many resources and people who want to help.” With her unrelenting drive and the support of L.A. Mission College, Kayla Larios is achieving her dreams—and inspiring others to do the same.
